We were happy to find so many reminders of home in the first days of adjusting to life in France. There are so many American stores, foods, and products available in Paris--it is amazing--one could probably use many of the same products as in the states (but what would be the fun in that!!!). Maybe it's because we're in Paris, and some might think I am exaggerating, but the Activia yogurt tastes so much better here, LOL.
At any rate, it has been fun discovering and trying (figuring out) new French products. One difference that has taken a little while to get used to is the way that milk is packaged. Take a look at this image--if you were to just glance at this bottle, it is reminiscent of the way bleach is packaged in the states.
But look again, my friend, no bleach here--this is actually milk! Another difference, most French people do not buy "fresh" milk or lait frais, refrigerated, and with a limited
shelf life. Instead, the majority buy this milk which only needs refrigeration after it has
been opened. Although it seems odd to me and I'm not quite sure what the process is, but my son loves it!
Another popular American import--American TV programs--everything from Law & Order to America's Funniest Home Video's, the later of which is translated to "A Mourir de Rire." The amount of American series on French TV is astounding, especially popular are the soap-opera-dramas like Desperate Housewives and the crime dramas. Shows like the CSI franchise, HOUSE, Dexter from Showtime, STARZS Channel's Sparticus, and HBO's TRUE Blood, can all be seen in primetime! Watching the shows, despite the fact that they are from previous seasons, has been a great way to improve my language skills (Sookie speaks FRENCH, who knew, LOL)! More soon :)
